Physical Education Requirements and Expectations

Physical Education is a New York State Education Department Mandate and is required for all students in grades K-12.  During the 2009/2010 school year, students at Archimedes Academy will be participating in a wide variety of fitness components, cooperative games, and community resource awareness.  The overall goal is to provide students with the knowledge, skills, and motivation required to becoming life-long movers. 
The following items pertain to general policies and procedures which every student at Archimedes Academy is required to follow while in the gymnasium in order to create a safe learning environment for all students participating.

GENERAL POLICIES AND PROCEDURES:
1. GUM - Gum chewing is prohibited during activity classes for health and safety reasons.

2.  HAIR- Hair should be worm in a manner that does not interfere with vision.  Long hair should be tied back.  Bulky clips should be avoided.

3.  JEWELRY - All jewelry must be removed prior to class and kept in a secure area.

4.  FOOD- No food or beverages are to be consumed or brought into the gym or locker room at any time.
                   
5.  LOCKERS - Each student is responsible for supplying their own combination lock for the locker room.  Sharing of lockers is not recommended. 

 6.  EXCUSES - If you are unable to participate in class activities due to illness or injury, you must still report to class.  If the illness or injury is on long-term duration, a doctor's note must be on file in the Nurse's Office and a copy given to your Physical Education teacher.

7.  MEDICAL RESTRICTIONS - Daily restriction will be covered by a written note from the parent or guardian indicating the problem or by clearance from the Physical Education teacher. 
-Temporary Restriction is for more than two consecutive classes and requires a note from your physician or from your parent.  The note from your parent must indicate that #1; you are under a doctor's care and #2; indicating that a note from the doctor will follow.

DRESS REQUIREMENTS:
1. You must change into appropriate attire for Physical Education.  It can be any of the following:
a.  basketball shorts, sweatpants or exercise pants.  They must fit without restricting movement of any
kind.  (NO zippers, pins, buttons, or belt loops.)
b.  A school issued uniform tee shirt.  NO cut off jeans or jean shorts will be allowed.
2.  Sneakers or footwear appropriate to the activity must be worn at all times.

GRADING POLICY:
The following is how a grade is earned in Physical Education and each unit will have additional requirements:
1.  Each semester will be worth 100 points.  You earn points each day you come to class prepared and participate according to performance rubrics.
2.  When a student's performance goes beyond the requirements of the unit, additional point will be awarded.
3.  Physical Education is a course based on demonstrating competence and aptitude.  Therefore, it is necessary to attend class in order to earn approximately 5 points.
4.  The following conditions will limit your class time and therefore your ability to earn points toward your grade: 
a.  non-participation
b.  lateness
c.  being unprepared
d.  absences
e.  not meeting minimum standards on behavior and performance rubric.
     
GRADING:
Grading for the semester will be based on the following scale:
Readiness and Participation* - 70% (Includes preparation, behavior, effort, and knowledge)
Tests and Quizzes - 10%
Homework and Projects - 20%
